Sou A Kou Ink and Wash Art Institute

History

In March 1990, the “Sou A Kou Ink and Wash Art Institute” was established under the leadership of Mr. Sou A Kou, a national-level artist and lecturer from China. The group’s name was changed to the “Sou A Kou Chinese Ink and Wash Painting Association” in September 2003. The “Sou A Kou Chinese Ink Painting Association” was established in March 1990 under the leadership of Mr. Sou A Kou, who at the time served as a national professor in China.

About sixty members of the Fukuoka Prefecture Sino-Japanese Friendship Association visited China in 2002 to mark the 30th anniversary of the normalisation of diplomatic relations between China and Japan. At the Beijing Capital Museum, they organised an exhibition of paintings and calligraphy titled “China-Japan Peace and Friendship” while they were there. The “China-Japan Peace and Friendship Art Exhibition in Fukuoka, Japan” and the “Japan-China Friendship Exhibition” took place in 2003 at the Fukuoka Art Museum and the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China, respectively. A joint presentation of the two shows was made. Additionally, the Japan-China Friendship Party, which attracted 300 guests, was held in the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Fukuoka. Since then, our school has made it a custom to annually host distinguished ink painters and professors of art from art universities in China and Korea as visiting teachers with the aim of improving the caliber of our ink paintings and enlarging the range of our artistic activities.

The Fukuoka Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China and the Fukuoka Prefecture Japan-China Friendship Association both honoured the Academy with awards in October 2003: the “Japan-China Culture and Art Exchange Award” and the “Japan-China Culture and Art Exchange Contribution Award.” Both prizes were granted in honour of the Academy’s and the Beijing Academy of Fine Arts’ accomplishments.
